Let go of the detail and discover a looser, more expressive way of painting the landscape.
This one-day workshop is designed for anyone who enjoys watercolour but would like to move away from detailed, traditional landscape painting and develop a looser, more contemporary and semi-abstract style.
Using the landscape as inspiration, we’ll explore how to simplify what we see and use colour, shape, tone, texture and expressive brushwork to create a painting that suggests a place without trying to capture every detail.
During the day we’ll look at:
- Simplifying a landscape into basic shapes and colour
- Creating interesting compositions from reference material
- Working with a limited and contemporary colour palette
- Loose, expressive brushwork
- Creating texture and interesting marks
- Knowing when to leave areas unfinished
- Allowing the paint to do some of the work
There will be demonstrations throughout the day, followed by plenty of time for you to experiment and develop your own painting with individual guidance.
The emphasis is on exploration rather than perfection. You’ll be encouraged to work more freely, make decisions about what to leave out and discover how much can be suggested with just a few well-chosen marks.
You will leave with new ideas, techniques and a fresh approach to painting landscapes in watercolour.
Suitable for: Artists with some previous watercolour experience. This workshop is not intended for complete beginners.
